Hair Loss Service (Male Pattern Baldness)

This service is for men over 18 years old experiencing male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). Finasteride tablets can help slow down further hair loss and may promote regrowth. Treatment is most effective in the early stages of hair thinning.

Who Can Use the Service?

You may be suitable if:

Inclusion Criteria

  • You are a man aged 18 or over

  • You have a regular, symmetrical pattern of hair thinning

  • Your hair loss is not due to another medical condition

Exclusion Criteria

This service is not suitable for:

  • Women (finasteride is not for female use)

  • Men under 18 years old

  • Anyone with hair loss caused by another condition (e.g. cancer treatment, illness)

  • Anyone with liver problems, certain urinary conditions, or psychiatric disorders (such as depression, anxiety, psychosis, schizophrenia)

  • Anyone already taking finasteride or other treatments for the same condition

If suitable, our pharmacists can supply:

Medicine: Finasteride

  • Dose: Take 1mg once daily (one tablet), with or without food.

  • Consistency matters: Take it at the same time every day.

  • Long-term treatment: Results usually take 3–6 months. You need to continue taking finasteride to maintain benefits. If you stop, hair loss may return within 9–12 months.

  • Supply: You will usually be given a 1-month pack (30 tablets), including a patient information leaflet.

Most side effects are mild, but it’s important to be aware of them. Common side effects may include: Reduced sex drive or difficulty maintaining an erection, Breast tenderness or enlargement (rare), Headache, dizziness, tiredness, Stomach upset, diarrhoea, or back pain

Seek medical advice if you notice:, Mood changes (low mood, anxiety, suicidal thoughts), Breast lumps, pain, nipple discharge, or swelling

  • Mental health: Finasteride has been linked to mood changes, including depression and rarely suicidal thoughts. Report any changes to mood immediately.

  • Breast changes: Rarely, men taking finasteride have developed breast lumps, tenderness, pain, or discharge. Report these symptoms promptly.

  • Prostate tests: Finasteride can affect the results of PSA blood tests used to check for prostate problems.

  • Pregnancy risk: Women who are pregnant should not handle crushed/broken tablets. Small amounts of finasteride may also be present in semen — use a condom if your partner is pregnant or may become pregnant.

  • Lactose intolerance: The tablets contain lactose.

This short course is designed to quickly target the bacterial cause of diarrhoea, helping to reduce both severity and duration of symptoms.
