Oral Thrush (Oral Candidiasis) Service

Oral thrush is a common fungal infection that causes white patches in the mouth which may be uncomfortable or sore. Our service provides quick access to treatment with Nystatin oral suspension for eligible patients.

Who Can Use the Service?

Who is this service for?

This service may be suitable if you (or your child):

  • Are 4 weeks of age or older

  • Have symptoms of oral thrush, such as: White patches in the mouth that can be wiped off, leaving red areas underneath
  • Soreness or discomfort in the mouth

  • Have provided valid consent (or parental/carer consent)

Exclusion Criteria

This service is not suitable for:

  • Babies under 4 weeks old

  • People with known allergy to Nystatin or its ingredients

  • Those with rare hereditary conditions such as fructose intolerance or glucose-galactose malabsorption

  • People with serious illness, recurrent infections, or other concerns — they should be seen by a GP

  • Anyone with recurrent thrush (e.g. more than once in 8 weeks)

Things to be aware of

  • People with poor dental hygiene or who wear dentures

  • People using steroid inhalers (remember to rinse your mouth after use)

  • People with diabetes

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding: treatment can be given, but only if the benefits outweigh the risks. If nipple thrush is suspected, topical treatment may also be needed.

Things to be aware of

  • People with poor dental hygiene or who wear dentures

  • People using steroid inhalers (remember to rinse your mouth after use)

  • People with diabetes

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding: treatment can be given, but only if the benefits outweigh the risks. If nipple thrush is suspected, topical treatment may also be needed.

Nystatin oral suspension (100,000 units/mL)

Dose: 1 mL dropped into the mouth 4 times daily for 7 days

  • Keep in contact with affected areas as long as possible

  • Take after food or drink

  • Continue for 48 hours after symptoms clear

  • If symptoms do not improve or worsen after 7 days → see your GP – Supply: 1 × 30 mL bottle (enough for full course) Storage: Store below 25°C in original container

Nystatin is usually well tolerated, but side effects may include: Mild irritation in the mouth, Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, or rash

Rare but serious side effects: Severe allergic reactions (facial swelling, difficulty breathing), Severe skin reactions (e.g. Stevens-Johnson Syndrome) If these occur, stop treatment immediately and seek medical help.

  • If you are under 4 weeks old

  • If symptoms do not improve within 7 days

  • If you have repeated infections (more than once in 8 weeks)

  • If you develop swelling, rash, or trouble breathing
