Cholera

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It spreads through contaminated food and water, especially where sanitation and clean water access are limited. Illness can range from mild to severe watery diarrhoea and dehydration. Travellers at higher risk include those visiting areas with outbreaks, working in humanitarian or healthcare settings, or staying in remote/rural locations.

Cholera is an infection of the intestines caused by Vibrio cholerae. It is usually acquired from contaminated food or water. Without treatment, severe dehydration can develop quickly, but prompt oral rehydration is highly effective.

Transmission happens through the faeco‑oral route—contaminated water, ice, raw or undercooked seafood, and food handled with poor hygiene. Prevention includes drinking safe bottled/boiled water, avoiding ice, eating food that is thoroughly cooked and served hot, peeling fruit yourself, washing hands with soap or alcohol gel, and receiving vaccination if at higher risk.

The oral cholera vaccine is recommended for specific higher‑risk travellers: aid and healthcare workers, those visiting areas with active outbreaks, long‑stay or remote/backpacking travel with limited access to safe water, and individuals with conditions that increase dehydration risk. It is not routinely needed for most short‑term tourists staying in standard accommodation.

After the primary course, protection lasts up to 2 years for people aged 6 years and over and up to 6 months for children aged 2–6 years. A single booster dose is recommended within these time frames if ongoing risk remains.

Parts of South and Southeast Asia, sub‑Saharan Africa, and areas experiencing outbreaks (for example after natural disasters or in humanitarian settings). Your pharmacist will advise based on your itinerary and current guidance.

The vaccine is taken by mouth. Each dose is mixed with a buffer solution and water. Do not eat or drink for one hour before and one hour after each dose. Doses must be spaced 1–6 weeks apart and the final dose should be completed at least one week before potential exposure.

Side effects are usually mild and short‑lived: tummy cramps, nausea, diarrhoea, headache, fever, or mouth/abdominal discomfort. Serious reactions are very rare. Speak to our pharmacist if symptoms worry you.

People with a known severe allergy to a previous cholera vaccine dose, or with a current feverish or acute gastrointestinal illness, should delay vaccination. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have significant medical conditions, or are taking regular medicines, our pharmacist will advise on suitability.

Vaccination is only one part of protection. Continue strict food‑and‑water hygiene, carry oral rehydration salts, and seek medical help urgently if you develop severe diarrhoea or signs of dehydration (intense thirst, minimal urine, dizziness).
