Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is a serious viral infection of the liver caused by the Hepatitis B virus (HBV). It is transmitted through contact with infected blood or body fluids, including sexual contact, needlestick injuries, tattooing, or medical/dental procedures using unsterile equipment. It can also spread from mother to baby during childbirth.

The disease can cause both acute and chronic infection. Chronic Hepatitis B increases the risk of cirrhosis (scarring of the liver), liver failure, or liver cancer. Vaccination provides long‑term, highly effective protection and is strongly recommended for travellers at risk.

FAQs

Hepatitis B is a viral infection of the liver that can cause both short‑term (acute) and long‑term (chronic) illness. It is spread through contact with infected blood or body fluids.

Transmission occurs via blood‑to‑blood contact, unprotected sex, unsterile tattoo or piercing equipment, shared needles, or during childbirth. Prevention includes vaccination, practising safe sex, avoiding tattoos/piercings abroad, and ensuring medical/dental instruments are sterile.

The vaccine is recommended for travellers to areas with high or intermediate Hepatitis B prevalence (Africa, Asia, South America, Eastern Europe), long‑stay travellers, healthcare or aid workers, and those who may require medical treatment abroad.

After completing the 3‑dose course, protection usually lasts for life in healthy individuals, though a single booster after 5 years is advised for ongoing risk.

Yes, there is a combined Hepatitis A & B vaccine, which can be given on an accelerated or standard schedule depending on your travel plans.

After completing the 3‑dose course, protection usually lasts for life in healthy individuals, though a single booster after 5 years is advised for ongoing risk.

Side effects are generally mild — including soreness at the injection site, tiredness, low fever, or mild headache. Serious reactions are extremely rare.

Anyone with a severe allergic reaction to a previous Hepatitis B vaccine dose or ingredient should not have it. If you have a fever or acute illness, vaccination may be postponed. It can be safely given during pregnancy if risk of exposure is high.
