Dengue Fever

Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes (mainly Aedes aegypti) which bite during the daytime. It is common in parts of Asia, the Pacific, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and sub‑Saharan Africa. Illness can range from a mild, flu‑like fever to severe dengue, which can be life‑threatening without prompt care.

Vaccination may be recommended for certain travellers at higher risk of mosquito exposure or during outbreaks, alongside strict bite‑avoidance measures such as repellents (50% DEET/20% icaridin), long‑sleeved clothing, and using air‑conditioned or screened accommodation.

FAQs

Dengue is a mosquito‑borne viral illness. Most people recover within 2 weeks, but a small proportion progress to severe dengue with plasma leakage and bleeding, requiring hospital care.

Dengue spreads via daytime‑biting Aedes mosquitoes. Prevent bites by using 20–50% DEET or 20% icaridin repellent, wearing long sleeves and trousers, using air‑conditioning/screens, sleeping under treated nets, and removing standing water near accommodation.

The vaccine may be recommended for travellers aged 4 years and over who are at higher risk of exposure due to long stays, repeated travel, outdoor/urban daytime activities in endemic regions, or during outbreaks. Suitability is confirmed during a pharmacist consultation.

Current data show protection after two doses with ongoing studies on duration. No routine booster is advised at present; guidance may change as more data become available.

Breakthrough infections can occur. Continue strict bite prevention and seek urgent care if you experience warning signs such as abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding, or marked drowsiness.

Usually mild and short‑lived: injection‑site soreness, headache, tiredness, fever, or muscle aches. Serious reactions are very rare. Discuss any concerns with our pharmacist.

People with a severe allergy to a previous dose or to vaccine components should not receive it. Vaccination may be postponed if acutely unwell with fever. We will discuss pregnancy, breastfeeding, or specific medical conditions during your assessment.
