Rabies

Rabies is a viral infection that affects the brain and nervous system. It is almost always fatal once symptoms develop. The disease is spread through the bite, scratch, or lick on broken skin from an infected animal — most commonly dogs, but also bats, cats, and monkeys in some regions.

Travellers at higher risk include those staying for long periods in rural areas, adventure travellers, animal handlers, and those working in healthcare or with wildlife. Pre-exposure vaccination provides peace of mind and simplifies treatment if exposed.

FAQs

Rabies is a fatal viral infection transmitted through bites, scratches, or licks from infected animals. It attacks the brain and nervous system, and once symptoms appear, survival is extremely rare.

Vaccination is recommended for travellers spending long periods in endemic areas, adventure travellers, cavers, wildlife workers, and those likely to come into contact with animals or bats.

Rabies occurs in over 150 countries, especially in Asia, Africa, Central and South America, and parts of Eastern Europe. Dog-transmitted rabies is most common in these regions.

After completing the full pre-exposure course, protection lasts several years. Boosters are recommended every 2–5 years if at continued risk.

Immediately wash the wound with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes, apply antiseptic, and seek urgent medical help — even if you have been vaccinated. Post-exposure treatment may still be required.

Usually mild — soreness or redness at the injection site, mild fever, or headache. Serious side effects are rare.

Those with a known severe allergy to a previous rabies vaccine dose or ingredient should not receive it. Vaccination may be postponed if acutely unwell with fever.
