Japanese Encephalitis

Japanese Encephalitis (JE) is a viral infection transmitted through mosquito bites, primarily in rural parts of Asia and the western Pacific. It affects the brain and can lead to inflammation, high fever, and in severe cases, permanent neurological damage or death.

Travellers spending extended time in rural or agricultural regions, especially during or after the rainy season, are at greater risk. The vaccine offers strong protection and is recommended for long-term stays or frequent travel to endemic areas.

Japanese Encephalitis is a mosquito-borne viral infection that affects the brain. It occurs mainly in rural parts of Asia and the western Pacific, and can cause severe illness or death.

Travellers spending long periods in rural or agricultural areas, or those visiting during transmission seasons in Asia and the western Pacific, should be vaccinated.

The Ixiaro vaccine is given as two injections, 28 days apart. Both doses should be completed at least one week before travel.

The initial course provides protection for at least 1–2 years. A booster is recommended if risk continues after this period.

Most people experience mild side effects such as soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site, and occasionally fever or headache.

Those who have had a severe allergic reaction to a previous Ixiaro dose or vaccine component, or who are acutely unwell, should delay vaccination until recovered.

Use insect repellent containing DEET, wear long sleeves and trousers, and sleep under mosquito nets to reduce the risk of bites.
