Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE)

Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection spread through the bite of infected ticks. It affects the brain and central nervous system and can cause fever, headache, and in severe cases, long-term neurological complications. There is no specific treatment — prevention through vaccination and tick-avoidance measures is essential.

The infection is found in parts of Europe (including the UK), the Baltics, Russia, and some areas of Asia. Travellers engaging in outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, or cycling in forested or grassy regions are most at risk.

FAQs

Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection transmitted by the bite of infected ticks. It can lead to brain inflammation and neurological complications.

TBE is found in parts of Central, Eastern, and Northern Europe, including Austria, Germany, Scandinavia, and parts of Asia such as Siberia and China.

Travellers spending time outdoors in forests, grasslands, or rural areas in risk regions should consider vaccination — particularly hikers, campers, and field workers.

The vaccine is given as three injections over several months. A rapid 3-week schedule may be offered for last-minute travellers.

After the full 3-dose course, protection lasts around 3–5 years. Booster doses maintain immunity for regular travellers or those living in endemic areas.

Most side effects are mild and include redness or soreness at the injection site, headache, or fatigue. Serious side effects are rare.

Those with a severe allergic reaction to a previous dose or any vaccine component, or who are acutely unwell, should avoid vaccination until recovered.
