Facial Hair (Hirsutism) Treatment Service

Hirsutism is the presence of excess, coarse hair in women in areas where hair is usually minimal or absent, such as the face, chest, abdomen, or lower back. This can sometimes be linked to hormonal conditions, but in many cases, it is not caused by any serious illness.

Our service offers treatment with Vaniqa® (eflornithine 11.5% cream) to help slow the growth of unwanted facial hair in women.

Cautions – when extra care is needed

  • If you develop sudden severe hair growth, voice deepening, increased muscle mass, abdominal swelling, or weight gain, you should be referred to your GP to rule out other causes.

  • Some medications (e.g. steroids, ciclosporin, hormone therapies) can also cause excessive hair growth.

  • This product contains certain ingredients (cetostearyl alcohol, parabens) which may cause delayed skin reactions.

  • This treatment is not hair removal – methods such as shaving, plucking, or waxing may still be needed alongside use of the cream.
