Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is a viral infection that causes inflammation of the liver. It spreads mainly through the faeco‑oral route — by consuming contaminated food or water, or through close contact with an infected person. Risk is higher in regions with limited access to clean water and sanitation, and with street‑food or raw/undercooked shellfish.

Vaccination provides highly effective protection for travellers. It is recommended for most trips to areas of intermediate or high risk, especially for longer stays, backpacking, visiting friends and relatives, or where food hygiene is uncertain.

FAQs

Hepatitis A is a contagious liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). Most people fully recover, but illness can be unpleasant and occasionally severe, particularly in older adults or those with existing liver disease.

HAV spreads via the faeco‑oral route — contaminated water, ice, raw fruit/veg washed in unsafe water, uncooked or undercooked shellfish, and poor hand hygiene. Prevention includes vaccination, drinking sealed bottled/boiled water, avoiding ice, eating food that is cooked and served hot, peeling fruit yourself, and frequent hand‑washing or alcohol gel use.

Most travellers to areas with intermediate or high HAV prevalence (parts of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Central/South America, and Eastern Europe) should be vaccinated — especially long‑stay travellers, backpackers, those visiting friends and relatives, aid workers, or anyone with chronic liver disease.

One dose gives short‑term protection. A booster at 6–12 months extends protection for 20–25 years (brand dependent). If it has been longer than this window, speak to our pharmacist — a late booster can still be beneficial.

Yes, combined vaccines such as Hepatitis A & Typhoid or Hepatitis A & B may be suitable depending on your itinerary and vaccine history. We can advise the best option at your consultation.

Usually mild and short‑lived: soreness or redness at the injection site, low‑grade fever, tiredness, or headache. Serious reactions are very rare. Seek advice if symptoms worry you.

People with a severe allergy to a previous hepatitis A vaccine dose or component should not receive it. If you feel unwell with a high fever, vaccination may be postponed. Pregnant or breastfeeding travellers can usually be vaccinated if risk warrants — we will assess this with you.
