Meningitis

Meningitis is a serious infection that causes inflammation of the membranes (meninges) surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It can be caused by bacteria or viruses, but bacterial meningitis is the most severe and can be life‑threatening without prompt treatment

Meningococcal meningitis (caused by Neisseria meningitidis) is of particular concern to travellers visiting regions known as the “meningitis belt” of sub‑Saharan Africa or those attending the Hajj or Umrah pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, where proof of vaccination is mandatory.

Meningitis is inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, most commonly caused by bacterial or viral infections. Bacterial meningitis can cause death or permanent disability without prompt treatment.

It spreads through close or prolonged contact — via coughing, sneezing, kissing, or sharing utensils with someone carrying the bacteria.

Travellers visiting the meningitis belt of sub‑Saharan Africa (from Senegal to Ethiopia) and those performing Hajj or Umrah must be vaccinated. It may also be advised for backpackers, healthcare workers, or long‑term residents in high‑risk areas.

The MenACWY vaccine provides protection for 5 years. A booster is required every 5 years for continued risk or repeat travel to affected areas.

We provide Menveo®, Nimenrix®, or Menactra® depending on availability. All meet Saudi Arabian visa requirements for Hajj & Umrah.

Usually mild and temporary — soreness at the injection site, mild fever, headache or fatigue. Serious reactions are extremely rare.

Those with a severe allergy to a previous meningitis vaccine or its components should not receive it. Vaccination may be postponed if you are unwell with a fever.
