Typhoid

Typhoid fever is a serious bacterial infection caused by Salmonella typhi. It is spread through contaminated food and water and is more common in areas with poor sanitation. Without treatment, it can cause high fever, abdominal pain, and in severe cases, complications affecting the intestines and other organs.

Vaccination is strongly recommended for travellers visiting the Indian subcontinent, Africa, South and Central America, and parts of Southeast Asia — particularly those staying with local families or visiting rural areas.

FAQs

Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection caused by Salmonella typhi, spread through contaminated food and water. It can be life-threatening without treatment.

Travellers visiting high-risk areas such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Africa, and parts of South America should be vaccinated, especially if staying with local residents or travelling for extended periods.

There are two main types — the injectable Typhim vaccine (single dose) and the oral Vivotif capsules (three doses over a week). Both offer similar protection for around 3 years.

Both oral and injectable typhoid vaccines provide protection for approximately 3 years. Boosters are required if ongoing travel risk remains.

Mild fever, headache, or soreness at the injection site may occur. Oral capsules can occasionally cause mild stomach upset. Serious reactions are rare.

Those with severe allergic reactions to previous doses, immunocompromised individuals (for oral vaccine), or those acutely unwell should avoid vaccination or seek advice first.

In addition to vaccination, practice good food and water hygiene — drink bottled or boiled water, avoid raw foods, and wash hands frequently.
